Questions to ask before beginning research
  • Where to Start?
    • What's your research question?
    • What information do you need to find?
  • Who cares about the same information? (e.g.: the government, competitors, investors, etc.)
    • What kind of information do they need?
    • Where would they get it?
  • Types of information available
    • Company and industry publications, such as websites, newsletters, annual reports, etc. (primary sources)
    • Articles from journals, magazines and newspapers (secondary sources)
    • Statistical, numeric and tabular data (primary or secondary)
  • Search Concepts
    • Combining Keywords
      • 1. AND: Adidas AND marketing

    • Advanced Search: Use this frequently to determine your search options. This will save you TIME and FRUSTRATION!
  • Rules and advice
    • Find index descriptors attached to useful article citations- redo your search with these "Official Database Topic Terms"
    • Always use the E-Mail, Print and Save functions embedded within the database window. It is usually not a good idea to use the File-Print or File-Save As functions in the upper left hand corner of the browser.
    • All databases function essentially the same way and have similar features.
    • USE THE HELP SCREENS
    • If you can't find anything: don't freak out and go to Google! Ask a reference librarian for help

    • Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios: From Dun & Bradstreet, provides ratio analysis for major industries and sectors. [HF5681.R25 I525 latest edition on reference]
    • Troy Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios: also provides financial ratios for industries. [HF 5681.B2 A4 latest edition on reference]
    • RMA Annual Statement Studies: Contains composite financial data on manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, service, and contracting lines of business. Arranged by SIC code, this work makes it possible to compare one company's performance relative to other companies in the same line of business. [HF5681 B2 R6 latest edition on reference]
  • Mergent/Moody's Manuals (Bank and Finance, Industrial, International, Municipal and Government, OTC Unlisted, Public Utility, Transportation) : Includes a brief company history, subsidiaries, products, governance, financials. [Ref HG 4961 and others - ask at Reference Desk for specific call number]
  • Daily Stock Price Record: For NASDAQ or NYSE, [HG4915 .D665 , most current edition on Reference]
  • Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys: Provides short and long term industry forecasts from S&P500 businesses. [HC106.6 .S74, most current edition on Reference]
  • ValueLine: Looseleaf binder format, provides stock charts and detailed financial analysis for companies and industries. Issued in parts: pt. 1, Summary & index; pt. 2, Ratings & reports; pt. 3, Composite list. Accompanied by manual: How to use the value line investment survey, expanded edition. [Ref HG4501 .V262]

Subscription Databases
All online indexes must be accessed through the CSUDH library homepage (library.csudh.edu). Select Journal Articles & Electronic Resources; You may either browse by subject area or go to your favorite resource using the Alphabetical List.

  • Factiva: Select Quotes, Charting or Company Screening for the latest or historical financials. Several useful reports available under Company link, especially their Ratio Comparison Report (or build your own custom report!). Use this resources for online version of Standard & Poor's publications. Also includes analyst reports.
  • Lexis-Nexis: Select Business from left column, then choose what type of information you need. Excellent for breaking industry news.
  • Mergent: Use Basic Search to search by company or industry, or try Advanced or EDGAR searching for more flexibility. Also includes industry reports.

World Wide Web: Generally Available Resources

  • Edgar/SEC: for publicly held companies
  • Company Annual Reports : Search the web for <your company> "annual report" for publicly held companies. Occasionally a privately held company will provide a company history or some general financial information.
  • Standard Industrial Classification System (SIC) : Numerical system from the Census Bureau to classify and categorize U.S. and international industries. SIC codes are used throughout the business literature to group and analyze industries and sectors. Use this guide to find SIC codes for various industries.
  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS): Replaced SIC codes starting in 1997, however, both systems are still in use. Use this guide to find NAICS codes for various industries.
  • Yahoo's Business Research Center: Easy to use information center for company financials and other information.
  • Hoover's: Search for company and industry information by name, SIC code or other criteria. Headings with a available to subscribers only.
  • AnnualReports.com: Free and easy way to find company annual reports. Search by company name or industry.
  • Annual Reports Library : Global in scope, contains millions of original Annual Reports and other filings from companies, banks, nonprofits and and other institutions.
  • Investor Relations Information Network (IRIN) Annual Report Resource Center : Company current and historic annual reports and other filings and documentation.
  • Public Register's Annual Report System (PRARS) : Request a print copy of an annual report over the web.
  • New York Stock Exchange
  • Over The Counter (OTC) Trading: Use the OTC Bulletin Board or the Pink Sheets to catch up on the latest non-exchange trading.
  • NASDAQ : All-electronic market since 1971
  • NYSE Euronext : Formerly the American Stock Exchange (AMEX)
  • Zacks: Stock quotes, company information and financial analysis from Zacks Investment Research.
  • BondsOnline: Tracks bond prices and bond market news, provides information on preferred stocks and convertible preferred stocks, self directed education, active personal advice and bond trading.
  • 10K Wizard : Search the text of SEC filings ("debt covenant", "executive summary"), contains news reports from Bloomberg and others. Search by company name or ticker symbol.

  • Hoover's: Publisher of Hoover's Handbooks and Guides, the company profiles are easy to read and full of historical and financial information. [Ref HG 4057 and others - ask at the Reference Desk for specific location]
  • Dun and Bradstreet's Million Dollar Directory: Five volume work lists companies with $1Million in profits. Indexed by company, region and industry. [Ref HG4057 .A165 2004]
  • Mergent/Moody's Manuals (Bank and Finance, Industrial, International, Municipal and Government, OTC Unlisted, Public Utility, Transportation) : Includes a brief company history, subsidiaries, products, governance, financials. [Ref HG 4961 and others - ask at Reference Desk for specific location]
  • Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies: Complete company listings to approximately 120,000 companies with national and state ranking by sales within SIC codes [Ref HG4057 .A565]

Subscription Databases - use these databases to find magazine, journal and newspaper articles about industries and companies (especially privately-held companies):

  • ABI/Inform Global: indexes international business articles in magazines, scholarly and trade journals, newsletters and reports.
  • ABI/Inform Trade & Industry : More than 750 business periodicals and newsletters with a trade or industry focus from 1971 to the present. Latest industry news, product and competitive information, marketing trends, and a wide variety of other topics.
  • EIU Viewswire : World and regional economic, market and political developments
  • Mergent Online Company and Industry Reports
  • Business Source Premier: also indexes business articles in many formats.
  • Proquest Newsstand (Complete): Current and archived issues of Barron's, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and other business publications.
  • Proquest Business & Economic Databases
