Suggested assignment to develop this skill.
Objective:
Students read and evaluate sections of a newspaper looking for opinions vs.
facts.
Activity:
Students choose one of the following topics: cloning, teenage pregnancy,
or violence on television. Students then find two magazine articles on the chosen
topic from two different magazines and answer the following questions about the
articles. Attach copies of your articles.
1. Is there an author listed? Does the article give you any information about the
author?
2. Does the article include facts and statistics? Give examples.
3. Is the article based mainly on opinion? Give examples.
4. Is there a bibliography or list of sources?
5. Does the article try to convince us of the author's point of view? Give
examples.
6. Which article is the most convincing and believable? Why?
