Information Competency Skill:
Student has the ability to organize, synthesize, and apply
information in a logical form.
Suggested assignment to develop this skill.
Objective:
To teach students how to take notes for research.
Activity:
Working with a cooperative teacher, students come to the library with a specific topic.
Part I
Each student finds one source and finds the information for 6 specific questions
about their topic on a sheet divided in six parts. The words can not exceed the
space allotted. The teacher demonstrates how to write in phrases to save space.
Method 1 (precursor to note cards)
Each student writes a paragraph or page using this information.
Part II
Each student photocopies or prints out of computer 10 pages of material on specific topic.
Teacher instructs on how to highlight necessary information.
Student writes page or paragraph on highlighted information.
Part III
Each student using floppy disk downloads information on a specific topic.
Student cuts and pastes appropriate information into word processor or notepad.
Prints out information and uses it to write page or paragraph.
