Information Competency Skill:
Student has the ability to organize, synthesize, and apply information in a logical form

Suggested assignment to develop this skill.

Objective:
Students research a topic and compile their results in the form of a poster, brochure, or leaflet. Students also write an annotated bibliography of the research tools they used.

Activity:

1. Students are given a list of current interest topics to research (e.g. abortion, euthanasia, gangs, animal testing, drugs). They are also given a sample annotated bibliography(not on the offered topics) to use as a format guide when they create their own bibliography later in the activity.

2. Students form small groups. Each group chooses a topic to research.

3. Each student uses a different research tool to research the topic (e.g. Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, Facts on File, Encyclopedia of the 20th Century, Los Angeles Times Index, the OPAC, People and Places, SIRS, Encarta). Students take notes on the information they find on their research topic.

4. Students also write down bibliographic information about the research tool plus a description of coverage, scope, and usefulness to use in their annotated bibliography.

5. Each student shares with the group the information he/she found on the topic. The group compiles the information and decides whether it would be best displayed in a brochure, leaflet or poster.

6. The group produces the brochure, leaflet or poster.

7. The group also compiles the bibliographic information for all the sources each student used to produce one annotated bibliography.
