Part-Time Reference Librarian(s)
California State University, Dominguez Hills invites applications for part-time librarians to work during the academic year (September – May) beginning Fall semester 2007. Appointments will be made in the Reference Services Department. The Reference Services Department includes library instruction, distance learning, web services, and interlibrary loan.
Part-time reference librarians conduct reference interviews and provide general reference assistance in all subject disciplines using both print and electronic resources. They instruct and assist patrons in using a wide array of web-based resources, including approximately 85 subscription databases. Part-time reference librarians may also participate in library instruction by providing general or subject-focused bibliographic lectures and developing print and/or web-based subject guides. May assist with other reference department responsibilities. Night and/or weekend hours are required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent. Familiarity with standard print reference tools and demonstrated skills in searching electronic resources. Ability to communicate effectively with a campus community of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member. Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred: Experience providing reference service in an academic library.
RANK/SALARY RANGE:
This is a temporary, non-tenure track position, and appointments will be made at the Assistant Librarian or Senior Assistant rank, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary: $3,702 minimum (monthly full-time equivalent), depending on qualifications and number of hours per week to be worked.

THE CAMPUS
California State University, Dominguez Hills, was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of over 13,500 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs. The University, with its five colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services.
The Library collection contains over 438,000 volumes and approximately 1,000 print journal subscriptions. In addition, online access is available to a wide array of electronic resources, including 85 subscription databases and over 25,000 electronic journal titles. Staffing currently consists of 9 professional librarians and 18 paraprofessionals. Construction of a new five-floor Library addition is expected to begin in Fall 2007. The California State University has been under collective bargaining since 1982.
