A
welcome addition to the University Library in 2002 will be a new integrated
library system, Innovative
Interfaces Millennium. Unlike
some systems on the market today, Millennium is not just an old creaky
system with cosmetic changes, but a new system from the ground up.
The product is entirely programmed in Java, a computer language
more sophisticated and secure than older programming languages such
as C++. In the last couple of years the instability of the Library's
present integrated system has increased, with a corresponding decrease
in its ability to grow with library needs. The new Millenium system is built
for patron empowerment and effectively utilizes integration with the
Internet, providing a sophisticated and attractive Web interface to
the library catalog. It also allows patrons remote access and management
of their library accounts. --------------------- |
The Library
is pleased to announce that its grant application with Associated Students
for an Internet Cafe on the second floor has been approved. The Internet
Cafe will be a self-serve center of tasteful furnishings and twelve up-to-date
computer workstations with flat-screen monitors, CD read-write, and fast
AMD Athelon processors. The purpose of the cafe is to provide a place
for students to relax, casually surf the Web, chat, play games, and check
their email. Food and drinks will be allowed. We hope to have construction
completed by mid-June |
